Dr. Kern grew up on a cattle and grain farm in rural Southern Illinois, where he was the middle of 5 children.  He attended Benton High School where he was a 4-sport athlete and point guard for a basketball team which finished third in the State of Illinois.  He attended Rend Lake Community College where he was named an Academic All  American in baseball and basketball  and was named the male athlete of the year.  Dr. Kern was then awarded a Division I scholarship as a baseball pitcher for St. Louis University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in premed biology.  He then signed a contract to pitch for the Oakland Athletics in professional baseball.  While with the Athletics, Dr. Kern was named the Dave Stewart Community Service player of the year. After a 3-year stent in professional baseball, he spent a year in graduate school at St. Louis University in biomedical engineering.
Dr. Kern attended the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (1999-2003) and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Southern Illinois University in Springfield (2003-2008).  During this time, Dr. Kern also served as a Captain in the Illinois Army National Guard.  Dr. Kern was then honored to accept a sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Los Angeles, California.  There, he worked with well renowned physicians in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and adult reconstructive surgery on the shoulder and knee.
Dr. Kern and his wife, Summer (from Southeast Missouri), decided to move closer to home and Paducah presented itself as a great place to raise a family and start his orthopedic practice.  He was the first fellowship-trained surgeon in arthroscopy and sports medicine to reside in the area and is one of the original founders of the Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky.  In 2009, Dr. Kern and his wife moved to Paducah with their son Caden, and have since had 2 daughters, Charli and Ellsie.  Dr. Kern continues to support the community in various ways. He allows high school and college students to observe surgeries and participates with local high schools by providing their students better access to the medical profession.  He also provides free physicals for athletes in the community as well as game coverage.  Dr. Kern is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, particularly bow hunting for deer.  He most enjoys spending time with his children and his family.
