This week’s OISI Staff Spotlight features Teresa Johnson, Nurse Practitioner at OISI Pain Management in Carbondale, IL.

1. How long have you been with OISI and what do you do here/ title?

I have been at OISI Pain Management with Dr. Tennyson Lee since January 2019.  I am a Nurse Practitioner.  I see patients in the clinic and provide physical exams, diagnoses, and treatment plans.  I love education and I try to make sure my patients are educated about their diagnosis and treatment plan.  I also perform Nerve Conduction Studies (the shocking part of the exam) and assist with Dr. Lee performing the Electromyogram (the needle part of the exam).

2. Favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job hasn’t changed since I was a kid in school–LUNCH.  I very much enjoy visiting with patients.  I really like knowing my patients well and knowing their whole background as far as what is meaningful for them.  I do like repeat visits with people but most of all I like it when they no longer need to see us in Pain Management because they have improved and feel better.

3. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I get out of bed for coffee and to spend the first 45 minutes of the day alone with my husband.  We drink our coffee in the dark and just visit.

I do what I do because I want to be a positive influence on someone’s life and help them get to their best health.

4. People would be surprised if they knew what about you?

I am terrified of electricity!!  When my kids were young they would ask, “Why did you have kids?” and I would tell them “So that I would have someone to plug in and unplug the toaster.”  Seriously, I will get someone else to plug in and unplug things every chance I get and still do to this day.  Yep, I am the person who is now paid to shock the tar out of people for their nerve conduction studies.  Who would’ve thought it?

5. What is your favorite thing to do in Southern IL?

I love to spend time outdoors with my husband on nice days.  I also love road trips and Southern Illinois is beautiful.
